Stress and Blood Components in Swine

چکیده
T HIS study was conducted in two phases. Phase one involved eight swine that were catheterized to facilitate blood collections at 8 am, 4 pm and midnight to determine circulating levels of plasma hydrocortisone, growth hormone, glucose, lactate, sodium, potassium, chloride and blood pH. Growth hormone levels decreased significantly from the 8 am to the 4 pm collection. Hydrocortisone levels were highest in the morning, lowest in the afternoon and increased slightly at the midnight collection. Plasma lactate, sodium and potassium values were highest at the 8 am collection, but the differences were not significant when compared with the 4 pm and midnight values. Phase two compared arterial and venous blood from 10 pigs for the same parameters studied in phase one. No significant differences in mean values were obtained when the two blood sources were compared, except for blood pH. The venous blood had significantly lower values than did arterial blood. Postmortem longissimus muscle color and lactate values were in normal ranges for the pigs used in both studies.

اندازه گیری سطح سرمی پروکلسیتونین در بیماران مشکوک به آنفولانزای خوکی (H1N1)
Abstract Background: Measurement of serum level of procalcitonin in patients with H1N1 influenza could decrease the consumption of unnecessary antibiotics. This study aimed to determine the serum levels of procalcitonin in patients with swine flu (H1N1) in the Hajar Hospital of Shahrekord in 2011. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study patients presenting with clinical manifestati...
متن کاملEffects of Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin C on Growth Performance and Blood Components in Broiler Chickens under Heat Stress
This experiment was carried out to study the effects of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and vitamin C (VC) on growth performance and blood biochemistry in broiler chickens under heat stress conditions. One of three levels of CoQ10 (0, 20, and 40 mg/kg of diet) and one of two levels of VC (0 and 250 mg/kg of diet) were supplemented to diets of chicks (from 1-42 d of age) in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. E...
متن کاملAir Pollution from Industrial Swine Operations and Blood Pressure of Neighboring Residents
BACKGROUND Industrial swine operations emit odorant chemicals including ammonia, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds. Malodor and pollutant concentrations have been associated with self-reported stress and altered mood in prior studies. OBJECTIVES We conducted a repeated-measures study of air pollution, stress, and blood pressure in neighbors of swine operations. METHODS ...
متن کاملKRL test to objective evaluation of welfare: sensibility to housing conditions and dietary supplements
The aim of this work was to determine the sensibility of KRL test to evaluate pig welfare in relation to different housing conditions and dietary supplements. It is reported that the response to oxidative stress could be considered as welfare parameter in swine. The KRL test allows the evaluation of total blood antioxidant activity. In the first trial we evaluated the total blood antioxidant ac...
متن کاملTerahertz Spectroscopy of Blood Components
The terahertz spectrum of human blood components and untreated swine whole blood between 0.2-1.4 THz (7-47 cm) were determined through the use of differential time-domain spectroscopy (D-TDS) techniques, with water being used as a reference. It was found that whilst significant differences between blood components and water were found at low frequencies (below 0.8 THz (27 cm)) for human blood p...
